We present here a list of biotech startups located in the Basel area. The University of Basel is the most famous institution in this area, including mainly 3 cantons (BS, BL and AG).
FoRx Therapeutics (see their website) – Founded: 2019 – Location: Basel (BS)
FoRx Therapeutics is a company aiming to develop first-in-class compounds for cancer treatment. FoRx focuses on drugging key molecular targets involved in DNA replication stress, as a new approach towards the development of targeted anticancer drugs.
Omne Possibile (see their website) – Founded: 2021 – Location: Basel (BS)
Omne Possibile brings together the key disciplines of XNA development: chemical synthesis, genetics,
directed evolution of enzymes and genomes, automated design of molecules and bioproduction pathways. Omne Possibile has launched two R&D innovation labs in Leuven, Belgium, and Basel, Switzerland, to accelerate product development and commercialization with a world-class team. The company eureKARE is an investor.
Synendos Therapeutics (see their website) – Founded: 2019 – Location: Allschwil (BL)
Synendos Therapeutics AG develops a new class of small molecules for the treatment of anxiety and stress-related disorders. There is a high demand for new pharmacological treatments in this area especially for certain diseases such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which has a high unmet medical need. Selective Endocannabinoid Reuptake Inhibitors (SERIs) restore the normal functioning of the endocannabinoid system by hitting an as-yet unprecedented drug target. The company is a spin-off from University of Bern and another Swiss institution (Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research TransCure). In April 2021, Synendos Therapeutics expanded Series A to CHF 24 million with new investment.
In 2022, Synendos Therapeutics ranked TOP79 at Swiss startup Award 2022.

Resistell (see their website) – Founded: 2018 – Location: Muttenz (BL)
Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to infection with over 50 million cases and 11 million related deaths worldwide. Resistell’s breakthrough patented technology delivers AST diagnostic results in hours instead of days, allowing clinicians to halt sepsis by providing the right treatment to the patient on time. In 2021, Resistell ranked TOP9 at Swiss startup Award 2021 (number 2 in Biotech industry).
Tolremo Therapeutics (see their website) – Founded: 2017 – Location: Muttenz (BL)
Tolremo Therapeutics AG develops novel small molecules that eradicate drug resistant cancer cells right at the start of a therapy. Tolermo’s resistance-breaking add-on therapies can be combined with existing cancer drugs, to meaningfully extend the lives of patients suffering from different types of cancer. In 2020 Tolremo received additional CHF 4.7M in Series A financing, bringing total Series A round to CHF 13.7M.

Perseo Pharma (see their website) – Founded: 2019 – Location: Muttenz (BL)
Patients suffering from severe digestive deficiencies (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency from pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, chemotherapy, infections) must take oral enzyme therapies to improve their nutrition. These therapies exhibit very poor drug profiles as enzymes are quickly deactivated in the gastrointestinal conditions. Perseo Pharma AG is developing a complete new series of digestive therapies based on its proprietary therapeutic enzymes platform, with much superior drug profiles, both in terms of efficacy and safety. In 2021, Perseo Pharma AG ranked TOP31 at Swiss startup Award 2021.
Versameb AG (see their website) – Founded: 2017 – Location: Basel (BS)
Versameb AG is a preclinical-stage biopharmaceutical company managed by an experienced scientific and business team. The company’s focus is the development of novel RNA-based therapeutics. Versameb’s proprietary VERSagile technology platform enables efficient development of functional mRNA molecules in multiple disease areas with high unmet medical need including immunological disorders, oncology and myology. In 2021, Versameb AG ranked TOP54 at Swiss startup Award 2021.
Alentis Therapeutics (see their website) – Founded: 2019 – Location: Basel (BS)
Alentis Therapeutics AG discovers and develops novel medications to treat advanced liver diseases, such as liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC). Alentis has in-licensed platform technologies and monoclonal antibodies which are the result of more than a decade of research from the University of Strasbourg and Inserm, the French National Institutes of Health and the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.
